Magazines and DEEP Photographers
It's easy to overlook the many markets for photography. You probably usually associate DEEP photographers with either fine arts (landscapes, nature, abstract compositions) or wedding/portrait work. However, our photographs also appear in a variety of publications (if you're in New Zealand, check out any recent New Wine pamphlets, for exampe). However, we have also had success in newspapers and magazines. Several months ago, Alexander23 had something close to a scoop with the Leonard Cohen concert in Wellington. His images made the national press and New Zealand's most prestigious music magazine. Now, for something completely different, Don Ravine's photos have been given a four page spread in the August 2009 issue of “Floral Design” magazine! Check out floraldesignmagazine.com in coming months if you cannot find a copy now – they may show parts of the article.

Yet another DEEP photo of the month
Foto First in Palmerston North, New Zealand is one of the lower North Islands busiest photo labs. Every month, they select their favourite photo of those which pass through the lab as "Photo of the Month". You may remember last year Murray Potter was awarded this honour with one of his amazing Antarctic images. Now Don Ravine has had the same honour. Ironically, the chosen image was added to an order only to take advantage of a lower price point! It's been beautifully printed and sits prominently on display in the shop as I write. If you happen to be passing through Palmerston North this September, check it out. Honestly, we have no connection with these people at all. They just like our work and we like theirs!
By the way, if you want to see this print, just type "virginia" into our search engine.

It's been a while!
Somehow the winter has been so busy that I have been ignoring the website. That's not to mean there has been no news though. So, what's happened?
Exhibitions: Alexander23s exhibition at Taylor Jensen Fine Arts in Palmerston North was followed by Don Ravine's first major exhibition. Both were very successful, drawing in large numbers of people and resulting in many sales, which is important, after all! Alex moved some of his prints across the road to the Palmerston North library, allowing more people a chance to view his unique work. Meanwhile Alex has shown prints in the USA, again with some success and is currently working on a couple of album covers - hopefully we can reveal details later. We are also working on setting up exhibitions in New Zealand's capital city, Wellington. Hopefully news about this in a month or two.
Meanwhile, the wedding season has started early, with DEEP photographers hard at work keeping an increasing list of clients happy. Ironically, as we invest in better gear, the demands increase proportionally - poor light and cramped spaces (the usual bane of wedding photographers) are expected but, at a recent outside wedding, we all had to make a run for it as hail flashed down during the exchange of vows. At least it gave us unique photo opportunities! We will be posting some of our recent wedding photos on the site soon, just so you know what we do.

Exhibition opening a success
DEEP photographer, Alexander23 has finally had a chance to show the New Zealand public why his work is in demand in the USA. Friday the 1st of February saw a very successful opening of his "Transcendence" exhibition at Taylor Jensen Fine Arts, Palmerston North, with a powerful selection of 23 stunning images. The exhibition is partly sponsored by Seresin Wines, with many of the photographs printed at cost by us in lieu of sponsorship. Gallery director, Stuart Schwarz commented that it was the best opening the gallery had had for quite a while. Is this a sign of the times? It is unusual for this gallery to hold an exhibition of photographs. However, it was a good call, with the first image selling within 15 minutes of the official opening and many, many patrons stunned by what they saw. We only hope our second exhibition (Don Ravine's images from Australia and New Zealand) is half as well received! Alex's exhibion runs until the 16th of February, while Don's opens on the 22nd. For those of you who can make it, it is certainly worth the drive to Palmerston North.

Welcome to Readers of "Education Review"
DEEP Publications Ltd. crops up in odd places. It has come to our attention that the latest issue of New Zealand's Education Review magazine has a link to this website on the front cover. If you have chased that link to this site, welcome and we hope you enjoy browsing through some of the images we have on display!

DEEP photographers to have concurrent exhibitions in prestigious gallery ...
Alexander23 and Don Ravine have, quite coincidentally, managed to persuade the prestigious Taylor Jensen Fine Arts gallery, Palmerston North, New Zealand, to hold exhibitions of their work. Artists have to book a year ahead to exhibit in this very popular gallery and it is rare for photographers to beat off more traditional artists for a spot. But in February and March 2008, First Alex and then Don will have the whole exhibition space for two weeks. This will be quite an event. They are seeking sponsors for the openings so that we can lay on a decent party for loyal purchasers of their work. Contact us if you would like to be involved.

International recognition for a DEEP photographer
At the recent Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica & New Guinea (ANZANG) Nature and Landscape Photographer of the Year Competition, DEEP photographer Murray Potter received not one but two Highly Commended awards for his stunning bird photographs. Check out http://www.anzangnature.com/ to see these and other high quality nature photographs.
Meanwhile, Don Ravine has just returned from Australia with a handful of exciting shots. Expect these on the site soon!

Another Award for a DEEP photographer
Tonight, DEEP photographer Don Ravine took out the Photography category in the Feilding and Districts Art Society Member's Exhibition, the Manawatu's premiere art event. The winning photo, Royal Twins, can be seen on this site. It was printed on canvas and framed behind glass.
This follows from Don's recent acceptance in the Laurie Thomas New Zealand Landscape Salon held by the Christchurch photographic society. No small feat as only 14% of entries were accepted in this competition.
Don's work can be seen "in the flesh" at the Feilding gallery, at Artitude in Sanson and at the Taylor-Jensen Gallery in Palmerston North, all in the Manawatu, New Zealand.

Cheaper and Better Prints!
This week we purchased a shiny new large format Epson printer. These printers use high quality archival inks and have a huge colour gamut. We now have full control over the prints we supply, in terms of colour and media. If you would like something special, let us know (deep@deeppics.com or follow the links in the "contact us" page.
As a bonus, it will also be cheaper to produce these prints. Look forward to a price revision, as soon as we can pin our busy webmaster down again.
